Safety Precautions when Swimming in Cairns

Cairns is regarded as one of the safest tropical cities in the whole world, and one of the safest of all cities in Australia. This buzzing tropical city seems to be getting popular by the day, with holidaymakers arriving in their droves to relax as they soak up the sun on the irresistible Cairns beaches. Also worth mentioning about the city of Cairns is the fact that it is an important tourism gateway to the famous Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforst, with regular snorkeling and scuba diving cruises departing from the dork throughout the year.

As a matter of fact, tourism in the city of Cairns has become so consequential that today the region is ranked fourth among the most visited tourist destinations in Australia, coming a close fourth to Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney.

While there are no main beaches that are ideal or reserved for swimming in Cairns, it does not mean you have to travel far to get a selection of irresistible sandy stretches to enjoy. Lying on both the southern and northern parts of Cairns are innumerable beaches, although if you are like many tourists, you will find yourself hanging out around the beaches that are around the heart of the city. Despite the tropical city being the safest throughout the world, it does not mean that those looking to visit should not take safety precautions.

Some safety precautions are common sense, such as walking only on well light areas during the night, leaving your homes and car locked at all times, ensuring your valuable items are attended to when in a public area, avoiding wandering out at night alone, and more importantly swimming in safe environments.

Like most other locations throughout Australia, there would be lifesavers patrolling popular beaches. It is highly recommended that you swim between the red and yellow flags only that are under lifesaver's patrol and supervision. November through to June is considered the Cairns' 'stinger season' when jellyfish (locally known as marine stingers) would be drawn to the coastline. Although most of these marine stingers are harmless, there are some varieties that sting leaving one with a very serious reaction.

When swimming in Cairns therefore during the months of November through to June, it is highly recommended that you observe the flags and only swim in the protective netted areas. Wearing of protective clothing is also highly recommended. Crocodiles can also be found in salt and fresh water sites in Northern Queensland. Although very occasional, there would be crocodile attacks on people in the remote and developed parts of the Tropical North Queensland.

Basic precautions and rules when followed would help one avoid such crocodile attacks. Swimming in creeks, rivers, or lagoons is discouraged in the northern Queensland region, also precautions like not cleaning fish near the edges of the river should be observed as well.

Should you be bitten by a box jellyfish, the first course of action to take would be to apply vinegar to the sting area. Most beach locations would have vinegar readily available. Should you be bitten by the blue bottles jellyfish, a cold compress of ice in cold water should be applied thoroughly on the sting area.
